The handful that read this will know that the Barricade has been an area for tumbleweeds. Jase has gone AWOL and I have been too for the most part. Between work, trying to get a PhD done, visits to hospitals, epic bike rides, soccer, AFL, etc etc, it has been hard to find time for anything.

So here is a catch up post, with some brief highlights and lowlights:

Tropic Thunder… what a disappointment. I was geared up to love it, but felt like I missed the joke. I think I laughed 3 times… actually it was 3 times… I can count them.

Hellboy 2… I didn’t get this either. I won’t say it was bad, I just didn’t dig the vibe of it. I am not a massive Hellboy fan, but thought this would be OK, but it was just meh

– New Kings of Leon… what a shame… I dig KoL. But not this one. To me it sounds like 11 times the same song. I will give it more of a crack, but I can’t see this one getting high rotation.

– New Mogwai… this just sounds like Mogwai. So I really dig it.

King Khan and the Shrines… an “on a whim” purchase in Missing Link. Man did I make out like a bandit. The new album “Supreme Genius” is GOLD. I knew a bit about them, and had some tracks from a split LP they did with the Dirtbombs, but man, this is 16 awesome party tracks. Has not left the car in days. Get it now!

– New Okkervil River… see Mogwai review above (but substitute the word “Mogwai” for “Okkervil River”)

– Nope, none.

Arrested Development… I am late on this one and finally caved since everyone says “you will love it”. I am half way through season one. Can’t say I love it. I like it, but not love it. There is something a little self-conscious about it for mine. But I like it enough to keep watching.

– Jase got me into Mike Allred and Madman comics in a big way. While I can’t say the current issues of Madman are amazing, they are still really interesting, and he is a great artist and a great writer. Allred’s X-Force I really dug too. And Dead Girl is just way too cool.

So that is it I think. New Drones is out tomorrow. Woo hoo! The big one of the year for me. I will be at the record store at 9 (well, close to that). And Wall-E tonight. Giddy up… the wait for this has been toooo long.

The new Drones track The Minotaur has been out for a few weeks now, and man is it sweet. Jase, James-o and I heard it when we saw them a couple of months ago. The album Havilah is out in about a month here in the fair old land of Oz… other countries may have to wait a little longer. But having heard most of it at the last Drones gig, I promise you it is going to be awesome. Yes, I promise.

But until then, check out the clip. Boy this is an odd one. Not sure what to think of it.

Oh, and the Drones are doing some album launches in October. We here in Melbourne get them in the opulance that is the Forum. Nice.

You have read Jase’s review of the Drones gig the other night, and I don’t think I have too much to add. For once we are on the same page.

I thought the new songs sounded great too. I said to Jase and James-o that I thought they were a touch more accessible than their usual stuff, but they didn’t agree. I’m right though, so you can quote me on this… the next Drones album will be big. Well, not big in a Powderfinger sense… maybe big in a You Am I when people liked them sense. It deserves to be anyway. Best Australian band at the moment, without a shadow of a doubt.

Dagnammit Jase, you beat me to it. Good review though… the prawn analogy was nice!

Well, let me start by saying if you want the unbiased review, then Jase’s is the way to go. But for what it’s worth, here is the Tweedy-worshiping version.

I LOVE Wilco. It must seem that I either love everything or hate everything to you readers. But I guess I only try to write about things that I have a strong opinion about. Anyway, for me I think Jeff Tweedy (probably along with Jack White) is the best music artist in the world today. I say this because I want my review to at least wear its biases on its sleeve.

Last nights gig was MAGIC. Last year Wilco returned after what seemed like forever, having skipped touring A Ghost Is Born here. Because of that I went to both Melbourne shows as well as a road trip to Sydney with my friends Shayne and CC. Those shows were great, with the second Melbourne night being my pick. But all 3 of those just got blown out of the water.

The 5 night residency Chicago Wilco have done recently was amazing luck for us. What it meant is that the set last night was an amazing mix from all albums. And that led to the magic. I do sympathise with Jase about not recognising songs. Me, I knew and could sing every lyric to every song last night. It was like Wilco had bumped into me before the show and asked “Matt? What songs do you want tonight?”. Sure there were are a handful I would have liked that didn’t surface, but when a band draws from so much material and comes up with an almost perfect set, you have to love it. But then in reality they could play a set of Bon Jovi covers and I would probably still get off.

Highlights? Firstly MY song. Well, not for me specifically, but on their website I requested Summer Teeth (the song) and last night I got it. Woo! So maybe it was for me. Let’s assume it was. And I am sure that they really must have actually read the requests as Jeff made specific mention about my comment, and also my mates CC and Shayne got ALL their requests too, including some slightly more obscure ones from Summerteeth (the album).

Other highlights were the opening salvo of Misunderstood then Reservations, all the Summerteeth action, and especially the absolutely rockin’ encore with Casino Queen, Red Eyed and Blue, I Got You, and Outtamind (Outtasite). But the second encore finish of The Lonely 1 was the icing… just gorgeous. The sound was actually spot on all night (being in front of the sound desk is certainly the place to be).

So I didn’t want to gush on, but alas I have. Sorry. You were warned at the start of the review.

P.S Oh, The Drones were cool too. I have seen them so many times now. They are definitely the best Oz band around these days. A new track which was nice, as well as my fave Cockeyed Lowlife of the Highlands. It just makes me want to see them in a sweaty pub again sometime soon.
